RESEARCH PROJECT EXPERIENCE
May – August 2017 Galiano Workshop on Science for spaces and species: A framework to guide the designation of protected areas in Canada
Co-organized and co-led project design, facilitation, and planning for a collaborative, multi-institutional research project on integrating science and evidence-based decision making into Canadian policy for protected areas expansion under the Convention on Biological Diversity 2020 (Canada Pathway to Target 1). This intensive three day workshop brought together leading scientific, legal, and policy experts with a team of early-career and postdoctoral researchers.
Sept 2016 - Liber Ero Postdoctoral Research: Building a climate change dispersal network for Canada’s protected areas
Research collaboration with private and non-governmental institutions to foster relevancy for protected areas applications. Partner institutions include: land trust organizations (Nature Conservancy of Canada, The Nature Trust BC), environmental non-governmental organizations (Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Yellowstone to Yukon), and a land-use consulting firm (O2 Planning and Design).
Project components include research intended to:
- refine climate change exposure algorithm and assess temporal stability
- estimate species’ exposure to climate change, and
- design protected area networks that incorporate climate change exposure and connectivity at local, regional, and national scales.
Sept 2016 - SESYNC Workshop: Indigenous communities - promoting social and ecological sustainability in the face of climate change
Principal investigator in a collaborative international workshop proposal and research agenda to investigate social and ecological sustainability of Indigenous Communities under climate change scenarios. The project will generate a (1) geospatial database with multiple forms of quantitative and qualitative data, (2) participatory model of drivers of community sensitivity and adaptive capacity, and (3) advance a synthesis between the different areas of expertise and types of knowledge.
Sept 2013-Aug 2015 Climate change attenuation sites and assessments of utility for biodiversity group project
Project leader of a collaborative effort spanning multiple universities. Facilitated discussion on definitions and principle components that could inform an algorithm to identify contemporary sites demonstrating climate change attenuation characteristics across continental North America. Assessed Bombus persistence and extinction within attenuation and non-attenuation sites.
2013-present International collaborative research project – temperature extremes
North American wide examination of species trait correlates for avian population persistence to temperature extremes. This project involves internationally recognized researchers such as Dr. Simon Ferrier (CSIRO, Australia), Dr. Arne Mooers (Simon Fraser University, British Columbia), and Dr. Jeremy Kerr (University of Ottawa, Ontario).
Dec 2013 Las Baulas del Marinos Parque Nacional, Costa Rica
Fieldwork monitoring of sea turtle population involving: nest relocations, hatchling release, and measurement and tagging of nesting females for leatherback sea turtle, black sea turtle and olive ridley.
June-Aug 1999 Algonquin wolf research study, Canada
Fieldwork involving field monitoring and data collection across southern Ontario for recordings of wolf pack vocalizations, and scat collection. Laboratory work involved preparation of samples and macrofossil identification of scat for dietary analysis. Prepping and morphological measurements of wolf skulls. Supervised by Dr. John Theberge.
Aug-Oct 1998 Macrofossil analysis of peat cores, Churchill MB, Canada
Qualitative analysis of peat samples to examine changes in vegetative composition and rates of carbon storage through time as a proxy for climatic changes. Supervised by Dr. Timothy Griffis.
